Newscoma in the bathroom with a guy

Aaaaaand, ‘Coma and a young man just emerged looking rather disheveled from the ladies’ bathroom. No comment.

Life lessons learned at the t-shirt table

Posted in Uncategorized on January 15, 2008 by newscoma

So it was bound to happen. Two people of English minds (one an English degree holder, the other an English teacher) were bound to eventually talk about life and its ins and outs when forced to sit together at a t-shirt selling table.

And it was bound to happen at a benefit held for a person such as the Stewman. Holly and I have just been discussing relocating and its…

[Ladies and gentlemen, this is liveblogging at its most raw and revealing.  When I--Holly--asked Scout if she had tylenol, she wasted no time in abandoning her sentence to find headache meds for a friend, pausing only to hand me the laptop and say, "finish this."  So I--Holly--will try to complete her thought as best I can.]

…relocating and its…um…possibility of happening in my life?  That is what we were talking about, but I’m not sure what she was going to say.  What happened was that ‘Coma dropped by the table telling me they wanted to get me to move to Martin, and I was very touched.  As Scout and I talked a little more about it, though, I had to admit I’ve been planning on bailing out of the whole region.  (In the rare case that one of my bosses reads this, I’d still like to think I have a job waiting this fall if I need it, incidentally.)

Point being, we were speaking of this area and how cool the thing she, ‘Coma, SQ, and Badger have going on over here.  Like all English majors, though, we both know there’s more we could be doing elsewhere, possibly in the field of writing…we just don’t always know what it is.  For me, I know being here right now is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing.  I just need to get near some mountains soon.

Of course I could go on and on, but this is about the Stewman, and the auction is still in full swing.  This is SUCH an awesome experience.

I’ll leave you with a joke I just made up:

Question:  How many postings before a blogger hijacks a blog intended for a benefit and turns it into blatant self-indulgence-fest?

Answer:  Er, apparently nine.

This just in….

We are raising money to get local radio personality Paul Tinkle to sing Madonna’s “Like a Virgin.”

Make those bids, people! Keep ‘em coming!

He must do the accompanying dance as well.

Once, twice, sold!

The auctioneer is going about a mile a minute….wait, no that’s a country song. Oh well, the auction for the benefit of the Stewman is officially on and Holly and I are chowing down on ’shrooms and taters. Quite yummy.

Local sports info director extraordinaire just bought me a Stewman drink and I must say that it has quite thrown me for a loop.

Sounds like they are onto the high dollar items. Oh, I want the Preds jersey! Too awesome!

Will be back later. Must take a trip to the bathroom.

Waiting for the auction.

Holly here.

Badger just dropped by, as did the waitress with the menu.  I was happy to see both, of course, but the waitress will be the one with the fried mushrooms later.

As for Scout, she has just been cut off after one “Stewman” commemorative drink.

Ooh, ooh, we’re about to be interviewed…more later…

I’m very sorry, ‘Coma,

Posted in Uncategorized on January 15, 2008 by newscoma

…but it appears I have lost track of how much money we’re making.  I was an English major, and all these numbers are simply more than I can handle.

The good news is, it’s a lot.

Love,

Holly

Hour Two

The tables are full and the feed is about to begin. Unfortunately, both Holly and I have been immortalized on camera, but if the radio mic comes near us, we’re bailing.

Holly is hungry so I fed her a t-shirt. After all, after fooling with the kiddies all day and filling their minds with “Beowulf,” she needs her tummy filled with fiber…even if it is cotton fiber.

NC is now at the mic and I just took someone’s number. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a guy’s number, but it was a number nonetheless.

NC just declared herself “Vanna White” and the auction will begin in 33 minutes.

Ciao for now!

Liveblogging the Stewman, the remix

Posted in Uncategorized on January 15, 2008 by newscoma

Scout and I are trying to figure out this liveblogging deal–my first post just got deleted.  Not that it matters, as nothing much was happening when I wrote it.  Oh, but that’s certainly not the case now!  People are bustling all over the place, and every single one of them is smiling.  As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve never met the Stewman, but what a spirit he must have to inspire such obvious love and humor, even under such circumstances and even in his absence.

P.S.  ‘Coma has a sexy emcee voice.  You should come hear it.

Come and get your red hot t-shirts

Posted in Uncategorized on January 14, 2008 by newscoma

R-E-D, H-O-T, Red hot, red hot red hot!!!

T-shirts are selling like hot cakes right now and the crowd is really beginning to pour in. Holly and I were just greeted by the Weakley County mayor and a few other dignitaries and the door is beginning to swing off the hinges with people coming in right and left.

The Opera House has never looked better. With Newscoma at the mic and the wall loaded to the gills with different auction items, this night will definitely be a night to remember.

Right now, Holly and I are talking about New Orleans amidst the t-shirt buyers and looking forward to the karaoke that is soon to come.

Newscoma must sing “Copacabana”. It simply must happen.

More later.

Reporting the news as soon as it becomes news.

Olivia’s Opera House

Whoa. Lots of activity going on.

Thanks to all the folks who have walked in off the street and given us some cash donations. It’s more than appreciated.

The benefit is being held at Olivia’s Opera House, 214 S. Lindell St. in Martin, which is a wonderful building in the heart of Martin and has been featured on Tennessee Crossroads back several years ago when it wasn’t in the greatest shape.

Olivia is from the area, relocated to Nashville for a spell and recently came back and opened the restaurant, which is smashing. The building has been completely remodeled and Olivia offered it up for us at the benefit.

The Friends of the Stewman want to thank her for her kindness and support.
If you are in the area, the event should be fun. A Cash Bar, specialty appetizers, an auction and friends coming out to honor our friend, Stew.
